Most dental procedures require more than one visit to the dentist. On the first visit you receive an injection of anesthesia, the tooth is prepared, an impression is taken, and a temporary restoration is put on the tooth. Within a few weeks, you come in for a second appointment, have an injection and the temporary is removed and then a permanent restoration is put in place.
With CEREC, the entire process is done in a single appointment. This means fewer injections, less drilling, and less time out of your busy schedule.
Other advantages of CEREC:
Allows you to keep more of your natural tooth. With traditional restorations, some healthy portions of the tooth must be cut away to provide the correct shape to keep the restoration in place. However, with CEREC, restorations are bonded into place, replacing the missing part of the tooth to form a continuous structure.
These materials closely match the composition of natural teeth. This means that the CEREC material expands and contracts with heat and cold, like a natural tooth so that the tooth does not crack.
The color closely matches your natural tooth. The CEREC materials come in a variety of colors that closely match all tooth shades, making the restoration invisible.
How the process works:
First the tooth is examined to determined what treatment is needed and how much healthy tooth structure remains. Then an anesthetic is administered and the tooth is prepared by removing the decayed tissue. Next, an Optical Impression of the prepared tooth is taken. Then the tooth is coated with a non-toxic, tasteless powder.
A camera takes a digital picture of your tooth. This entire process takes only a few minutes. Using this photo, we are able to mill a restoration out of a block of ceramic in about 10 minutes. The restoration is then bonded to the tooth with an adhesive.
